Toon Leong Coffee Shop was started by our grandfather in the heart of George Town, serving coffee and tea to the hardworking community around Jalan Transfer. What began as a humble corner-lot kopitiam became a gathering point — a place where neighbours, traders, and labourers found rest and a strong cup of kopi before the day's work.
1940
Where it all began
Our grandfather believed in simple things done well: quality beans, roasted with butter and sugar in a traditional wok, brewed through a cloth sock filter, and served with sincerity.
In those early days, the kopitiam was more than a place for drinks — it was the social heart of Jalan Transfer. A place where stories were shared, deals were struck, and friendships were forged over kopi.
1960s
A community cornerstone
The second generation took the reins, maintaining the same recipes and commitment to quality. The menu grew to include the beloved roti bakar and half-boiled eggs that became our signature breakfast set.
Through the decades, as George Town evolved around it, Toon Leong remained its constant — a familiar face in an ever-changing city.
Today
Preserving the legacy
Now in the hands of the third generation, Toon Leong continues to honour the traditions passed down through our family. George Town has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and visitors from around the world now walk through our doors — discovering the same authentic taste from over 80 years ago.
